2015 WEST CORK MASTERS - TEAM OF THE YEAR
The 2015 West Cork Masters League Team of the Year announcement brings an end to another successful summer campaign of masters’ soccer in the west Cork region.

Cloughduv Celtic dominated the O’Brien’s Bar Rosscarbery sponsored Masters League, claiming a fourth title in five years although failing to record a second consecutive double after losing 1-0 to Dunmanway Town in last weekend’s Southern Bar Dunmanway sponsored Cup final.

This year also marked the first time Castlelack tasted Masters success following the Lackey Park side’s narrow defeat of Bunratty United in the Southern Bar Shield decider, ensuring three different clubs lifted silverware in 2015.

Each competing club were asked to nominate their standout players following the conclusion of the summer campaign before a finalised Masters League Team of the Year was compiled. Unsurprisingly, league champions Cloughduv and runner-up Drinagh feature prominently in a final listing.

Clement Doyle enjoyed one of his most consistent seasons between the sticks for Cloughduv and deservedly takes the goalkeeping position. David Hourihan weighed in with three goals and was one of Bantry Bay Rovers’ most prominent defenders during a productive campaign for the Kealkil side. Hourihan along with Dunmanway Town’s equally consistent Fachtna Collins complete the team of the year’s defence alongside Cloughduv duo Dermot Desmond and Barry Cullinane.

Desmond and Cullinane’s heroics in the heart of Celtic’s back-four were central to the Cloughduv club retaining the league crown underlined by the fact the champions conceded a mere 5 goals (the best defensive record in the league) en route to lifting the trophy.

John Paul O’Mahony was an automatic choice for one of the three midfielder positions. O’Mahony was in outstanding form throughout the summer, setting the tempo in the centre of the park and contributing 4 goals as part of Cloughduv’s title-winning squad.

Nick Cole produced a string of eye-catching displays in a struggling Bunratty United team that were unlucky to lose the Masters Shield final. Cole was also the Schull club’s top scorer with 3 goals and regularly mentioned as one of United’s top players during 2015.

Drinagh Rangers’ Robert O’Regan made a huge impression in his debut Masters season and richly deserves his place amongst this year’s best players. Injury robbed Drinagh of O’Regan’s services towards the end of the campaign but his early efforts warranted inclusion.

David ‘Sammy’ Mawe had a season to remember for Dunmanway Town and was most club’s selection as first-choice striker for the 2015 team of the year. Mawe’s diving header secured the Masters Cup at for the Mohona club last weekend and 13 goals in all competitions cemented the talented forward’s place atop the end-of-season Golden Boot standings.

Mawe is joined in a three-pronged attack by Drinagh Rangers’ Mike Doolan and Clonakilty Town’s Killian Hurley. The experienced Doolan may not have netted as many goals as in previous seasons but the Canon Crowley Park club’s striker played a pivotal play-making role in helping Drinagh finish second and reach the last-four of the Masters Cup.

Killian Hurley made a big impact playing up front for Clonakilty Town over the summer months, scoring 6 and assisting many of the 21 goals (the highest total in the 2015 Masters League) his team netted to finish a creditable third.

The Masters Team of the Year is rounded off by Bantry Bay Rovers goalkeeper Colin Clancy who played superbly for the Kealkil side. Defenders Jimmy Cullinane (Castlelack), JJ Hurley (Drinagh) and Joe Gallagher (Castletown) are also included following their sterling efforts.

Midfielders Michael O’Mahony from Ardfield, Sam Kingston representing Clonakilty AFC and Cloughduv’s Martin McCarthy also make the final cut with Clonakilty Town’s Mike Deasy and Drinagh’s Darragh Connolly rounding off a talented line-up.
